The old sweet factory thaxted
Mole were invited to a limited competition for the re-development of a sensitive site in the centre of the medieval town of Thaxted, in Essex. The site had been previously occupied by warehouses and factory units, along with the Grade 2 listed original Victorian ‘North Essex Sweet Factory buildings. Our scheme looked at the existing street patterns, the prevalence of rear lanes which give Thaxted its scale and form. The strategy for distributing cars around the site and designing all areas as shared surfaces gives the development a rural, relaxed quality, full of incident and delight.
