The Large White: Norfolk Broads Visitor Centre
International Competition, Finalist
The building is located on the edge of the river, hovering above the flood level and amidst the reeds. Conceived as two buildings that allow the river walk to pass between them, the design plays on images of sails seen across the fields- a typical and particularly striking sight in the ‘Broads. The two thatched roofs splay up, creating exciting and dramatic internal volumes for café, exhibition, and education spaces. Designed to be self-sufficient in energy by the use of water-source heat pumps and solar panels, the building would be built from highly insulated prefabricated SIPS panels on a simple steel frame and trussed rafter roof.
