The building expresses the Department’s commitment to sustainable design; it is constructed entirely from timber, insulated with hemp, and cooled using innovative radiant ceiling panels with a system that exchanges heat with the ground.',

True, it’s made for a client family that sought Mole out, but you can see that while it has architectural clarity, this should always be an easy house to live in. It accommodates all kinds of furniture. It is detailed to soften itself into the background. It’s on the sweet side of architecture – but most of the best normal houses are. It is, crucially, a great example of something architects tend not to do: make a real, comfortable house.” -Architects Journal 29 10 09',

We have a good record of obtaining permissions for challenging sites or for unusual designs.

Building Regulations Approval is obtained after the detailed design has been completed. The regulations cover structural design, drainage, energy conservation, ventilation, safety, disabled access, and prevention of water ingress. Submissions for building regulation include detailed drawings as well as calculations proving the structural design and energy calculations demonstrating the performance of the building. Other consultants will need to be employed to complete these calculations.

Construction drawings are completed that show exactly how the building goes together. Detailed drawings are essential to ensure that the building looks beautiful as well as performing well- we try and consider every corner of the building in advance of construction. Good construction details are also necessary to obtain cost certainty; the more information that is known in advance, the more accurate the tender price will be.

Specifications are written to accompany the detailed construction drawings. These describe in detail the method and materials for the construction. On most jobs we use the industry standard National Building Specification software.

Procurement of the building can happen in a number of ways. Traditionally a number of contractors are selected to tender for the work against the drawings and specification. This method has many advantages, and is the best way of achieving best value for a building of high quality. It is also possible to negotiate with a preferred contractor, or enter a two stage tender process where a contractor is chosen prior to completing the detailed design, or the project could be let on a number of trade contracts with separate management. We have experience of all these methods and can offer sound advice appropriate for your project.

Contracts are necessary to ensure that both Employer and Contractor are treated fairly and protected during the complex process of construction. We usually recommend using the JCT contracts, which have 20 years of case law behind them. The point of using a contract, though, is to avoid disagreement, and in 10 years of practice we have never been involved in a dispute.',

//v1.1                    'Passive solar design
Siting should be the first priority, to get the most from the sun. In order for passive solar houses to work well, the building envelope must be extremely well insulated and the building air-tight. The building must be able to store the heat, and prevent summer over-heating.

Reduction in CO2 production
Fossil fuels are the most significant contributor to the production of CO2, and hence global warming. Buildings account for nearly a half of all energy consumption, so doing something to reduce this has a real effect on CO2 production. This can be achieved by the following:

1.

Reduce the heat loss of the building. This is simply and effectively achieved through high levels of insulation, by far the most cost effective way to reduce energy consumption. Windows ideally should be high performance with an internal low-e coating, and argon filled cavities. Recover heat from exhaust air using heat exchangers. Reduce air leakage through careful design and site inspections.

2.

Eliminate the extensive use of high-energy production materials- metals and concrete. Concrete should be used where it is most useful- to increase thermal mass internally within the insulated envelope.

3.

Install a heating system that can offer an alternative to fossil fuel. Consider heat pumps; these generate heat output equivalent to three times the electricity input, taking heat energy from the ambient air or earth. Use solar water heating if the house is orientated towards the South, and use of wood-fired stoves or boilers. Internal finishes that allow thermal storage contribute to an effective passive heating strategy.

4.

Use a high percentage of low-wattage bulbs- use new low-energy floodlights, or flourescent battens as hidden light source to decrease electricity consumption.

Recycle!
Use re-cycled materials or products manufactured from these. The structural frame, structural flooring and panels can all made from timber waste products. Insulation can be used that is made from recycled newspaper or hemp, floor coverings, acoustic underlay, bricks, splashbacks, roof coverings, etc can all be made from either reclaimed or re-cycled materials.

Use Timber
Timber absorbs CO2 during its growth, and so is part of the answer to slow down global warming. The planet needs an additional five million square kilometers of trees to absorb CO2, and managed timber plantations for construction use can be a part of this. No tropical hardwoods! Increased wall insulation is most readily achieved using timber frame construction.

Shut the door in the winter, and turn off the lights. Ventilate naturally. Live outside when the sun shines.',
'Director Meredith Bowles has been involved in the ‘sustainability’ movement for many years. He is a regular speaker at Eco-build, and has chaired conferences on Climate Change and Construction. Mole Architect’s design for The Black House, constructed in 2002, was a progressive design exploiting prefabricated timber construction and heat pump technology to produce a low energy building. It has been used an example by Local Authorities, TRADA, and the BRE to demonstrate the principles of low energy design.

Subsequently Mole Architects were employed by The University of Cambridge to design the new studio for the Department of Architecture, whose research department is a world leader in Sustainable Design Research. The timber framed studio is designed to have little embodied energy, and employs an innovative low energy cooling strategy designed to give thermal mass to the lightweight building. The Department are monitoring the performance of the building in use.

Mole have worked with energy consultants Max Fordham LLP to develop energy strategies on a number of buildings, and are now working with the PassivHaus Planning Package software to better model the anticipated performance of our building designs. We believe that in optimising ‘low-tech’ solutions before employing any expensive technology to aid performance.',

The material quality of a building affects the way it feels; determines how warm it will be at different times of the day, whether it absorbs sound, transmits light, offers comfort, suggests grandeur, offers permanence. The way in which a building is put together is an intrinsic part of the expression and aspirations of the building”',
