NEWNHAM NEW HOUSE, CAMBRIDGE
This bold new-build family house is set within a Conservation Area in Cambridge, and provides richness and contrast to the surrounding houses. Designed to be constructed from CLT, the materials are derived from the nearby Arts and Crafts houses, with roughcast render to the lower walls, dark timber at the entrance, and glazed terra cotta curved tiles on the upper floor. The house is split into two, with a two-storey wing facing the street and an angled single-storey wing projecting into the asymmetrical south-facing garden. In between these two parts is a small courtyard garden which receives late afternoon sun and is overlooked by the study. Living spaces are located at the rear, with service rooms and two receptions in the front block. Upstairs are four bedrooms that are served from a glazed corridor overlooking the street.
