Moat House, Mill Ride, Windsor, 2012
Moat House sits in extensive grounds created from an existing golf course. The patterns of the ancient landscape are uncovered and overlaid with a new landscape of formal rides and tree belts designed to enhance views and create grandeur. The existing ponds are enlarged to create a lake that partly surrounds the new 1200m2 house. The house is modern, but evokes the qualities and traditions of the country mansion. Axial views into the landscape, a fortified quality derived from ‘towers’, symmetrical elevations, a moated garden and internal courts all add to the sense of a house that is rooted in history. It’s a contemporary classical house.
